The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 enters the foldable smartphone arena with a number of incremental advancements over its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Sporting an upgraded Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, it does offer slightly improved performance, although the difference may not be immediately noticeable to the average user.

When pitted against other foldable contenders like the Google Pixel Fold, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 stands out primarily for its under-display selfie camera — a feature absent in the Pixel Fold, which opts for a more traditional bezel.

Samsung DeX is undeniably a significant feature for those who envisage utilising their smartphones for work. The capability to transform your device into a desktop-like experience is appealing, especially for those on the move.

In terms of construction, the device maintains its lineage, employing Armor Aluminium coupled with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for added durability. It’s a hefty device, but surprisingly less imposing than one might initially expect.

The device features two displays: an external 6.1-inch screen and an internal 7.6-inch foldable one. Both utilise Dynamic AMOLED 2X technology and support a 120Hz refresh rate. While the front display has garnered mixed opinions, primarily due to its potential for faster battery drain, Samsung contends that the internal folding screen is 30% brighter, peaking at 1,750 nits.

The visibility of a crease along the folding axis remains a drawback. Although foldable technology is improving in this area, the crease on the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is still discernible, especially when viewed at particular angles or when the screen is inactive.

Security measures are robust, featuring face recognition alongside a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, albeit the latter may not suit all preferences.

On the camera front, the device is equipped with a rear triple camera setup supporting 4K at 60fps and 8K video capture. While it might not rival the performance of more conventional smartphones, it does deliver competent photo quality. The front-facing 10MP selfie camera also offers intelligent features designed to improve low-light photography.

Performance is generally commendable, although thermal throttling was evident during 3Dmark Wildlife stress tests — a likely result of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.

Software-wise, the device runs on Android 13 skinned with Samsung’s One UI, and promises up to five years of software updates. While user-friendly, the software suite can feel somewhat cluttered with both Samsung and Google apps offering similar functionalities.

The interface allows for multi-tasking via split-screen mode and an additional floating window. However, certain features like drag-and-drop functionality remain confined to native apps — a limitation that seems like a missed opportunity.

For media consumption, the larger foldable display is an asset, particularly for long-haul journeys. Nevertheless, the difference in image quality might not be as striking compared to traditional smartphones.

When it comes to gaming, the device performs admirably due to its powerful hardware specs. Samsung’s One UI includes a Game Launcher app that allows you to optimise your device for gameplay.

Battery life is a slight concern, with the 4,400mAh battery falling on the lower spectrum when compared to competitors like the Pixel Fold. However, it generally manages to last through a day of average use.

For those in the UK looking to make the switch, Samsung provides enticing trade-in options with savings up to £510, additional perks like one year of Disney+, and a three-year manufacturer’s warranty.

In summary, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a compelling but not flawless offering in the foldable smartphone category. Prospective buyers must weigh the benefits against the compromises. Samsung, once the lone vanguard of foldable technology, now faces mounting competition from the likes of Google and Honor, a factor that could compel further innovations in future iterations.
